Personal development

Why taking a break for personal development is okay

We spend most of our lives working, and that can of course be draining emotionally and physically. Seeing the same office or work environment day in and day out can become bland and boring. Whilst it is important to implement changes and habits that can make this more manageable, sometimes you just have to take a break in order to work on yourself.

Taking a break has to be serious, not just taking a holiday but a real break from everything in order to self-improve. Call it a sabbatical, an adult gap year or just an extended leave, the outcome is the same.

A career break is about leaving behind work and everything that comes with it, and focusing on new things in the meantime. This could be travelling, volunteering, studying, caring for yourself or for family or just to take a break for yourself.

You can take this time to personally develop through self-exploration, de-stressing and working on personal projects.

The timing and duration for this break should be a considerable length, a couple months to a year. Shorter than this can make it seem just like a holiday, which it is not supposed to be.

A break for personal development can be for anyone, but especially for those who feels tired of their work and work environment and need some time off to work on personal projects and personal development. It is much more so about this self-exploration and development than lounging by a pool type of holiday.

Emma Watson, famous Harry Potter actress, took a year-long acting sabbatical in order to work on personal development. She plans on reading much more, and to take a break in order to get her head on straight, believing she can’t keep up with herself anymore.

Taking a break for personal development is important for anyone, and should be done at some point in life by everyone.
